Plastic bag ban passed by ACT Assembly
After a four-month transition period starting on 1 July 2011, the full plastic ban will come into effect on 1 November 2011,
The ban applies to single use plastic shopping bags of 35 microns or less, generally the type distributed through supermarkets, grocery stores and takeaway food outlets.
Plastic bag ban passed by NT Legislative Assembly
Under new laws, from 1 September 2011 Territory retailers can no longer supply lightweight, single use, non-biodegradable plastic bags.
This Plastic Bag Ban prohibits retailers from selling or giving away plastic bags with handles and made entirely or partly of polyethylene polymer less than 35 microns thick, including those marked degradable.
